Final Synopsis

Oblivious

A family home on Christmas day. The family members wake up and run downstairs to the living room. They gather around the Christmas tree. The dad (Adam) begins to cough loudly to get everyone’s attention. He picks up a small wrapped gift and holds it up in the air as he waits for silence. He announces that the present is for the youngest (Katie, 12) and she joins him to open it. She kisses both of her parents (Rachel and Adam) on the check and the present opening session continues. The family begin to open the presents when the mother realises her eldest daughter (Melanie, 24) hasn’t come down and goes to call her. Mel is in the bathroom and applies the finishing touches to her make up. She turns around to straighten her dress when she see’s something suspicious poking out of the bathroom bin. She bends down to pick it up. She looks at what it says when the mother begins to bang on the bathroom door. The eldest hides it back in the bin and lets her mother in. The mother has finished doing her hair and goes to spray it with hair spray. She shakes the can and sprays but nothing comes out. She shakes it again a few more times and sprays but it is completely empty so she drops it down into the bathroom bin. Upon its fall it knocks a few things out of the bin onto the floor. She looks down to see what has fallen on the floor. She picks up the same item that Melanie did and looks at what it says. She hides it back into the bin and leaves. The mum (Rachel) is now cutting vegetables in the kitchen when Melanie comes in and pours herself a glass of wine. The rest of the family are in the living room playing twister. Melanie joins them in that room but does not join in with the game; she stares at the youngest who is content. The family are then gathered around the dinner table finishing up there Christmas dinner, whilst the others open there crackers and tell the jokes. The family fun at the table soon turns into tension as the mother and the eldest argue. There is then an awkward silence at the table and the family members all look at each other in confusion. Katie stands and reveals. The family are shocked and angry as she heads to her room in frustration. They all look at each other shocked and sad that the family fun day has be destroyed as Katie has let them down.

Synopsis 3

Oblivious

As the family awake there will be a variety of shots as we see them heading down stairs, We can hear them express their joy for this special occasion. They all begin to open presents when the mother Rachel realises that Mel hasn’t come down yet so she calls her down. Through close up and extreme close ups we will see Katie open the present that her parents reveal she has been given due to her hard work and high achievements at school. They finish opening the presents and they all go to get dressed. We see Mel in the bathroom applying the finishing touches to her make up as we then hear her mum banging on the door asking her to hurry up. As Mel straightens her dress down through an over the shoulder shot we see her spot the pregnancy test as she picks it up and sees that it is positive. Mel leaves patting her mum on the stomach saying ‘I can’t wait for dinner’. Rachel is now in the bathroom and she goes to spray her hair with hairspray but the can is empty so she drops it down into the bin, when something falls out… the test. Once again through an over the shoulder shot we see her pick up the test and see that it is positive, she them hides it back in the bin. We move on to find Rachel now cutting vegetables in the kitchen, the sound of the knife slicing and family background noise in the other room can be heard. Mel joins her mum in the kitchen to get herself a glass of wine. Sly comments between Mel and Rachel continue over dinner as each other thinks the other is pregnant. At the dinner table we see and hear Rachel snap as she blames all on Mel who is offended that her mum presumes that it is her. Dad (Adam) roles his eye’s to suggest that this wouldn’t be the first time Mel has done something to cause the family trouble. Through shouting at one another Mel insists that it is not hers and her dad asks will whose it is then. At this point all goes silent as the family look at one another. Katie who has been out of the way all day reveals that it is hers. We see Rachel and Adams response through reaction shots. Rachel breaks down, and Adam shouts at her not to be silly, because of course it can’t be Katie their perfect innocent daughter but it is as she stands in frustration confirming so. We see her run off and the mum begin to breakdown

Synopsis 2

Oblivious


It’s Christmas day and the Costello family are awakening. All the family have come together in the one home for this special occasion. There is a lot of excitement in the household, and they all go down to open there presents. Katie is given a new mobile phone for Christmas. Her mother explains that she has been given this because of how well she is doing in school and that they are all so proud of her. They start but the mother Rachel notices that he youngest daughter Katie hasn’t come down yet, so she calls for her. The present open session ends and they all go to get dressed. Mel (the eldest of Rachel’s children) is in the bathroom applying the finishing touches to herself. She turns around to straighten her dress down, upon looking down she sees the tip of a pregnancy test in the bathroom bin. Rachel then begins to bang on the bathroom door as she needs to go in. Mel lifts the test and sees that it is positive, she places it back in the bin. She opens the door to let her mum and pats her on the stomach whilst saying “I can’t wait for dinner”. Rachel frowns and then goes into the bathroom. Rachel goes to spray her hair with hairspray but it is empty so she drops it into the bin, and the test falls out. She frowns again to see a pregnancy test on the floor and picks it up and sees that it says positive. She hides the test back in the bin and leaves. Rachel is now cutting vegetables in the kitchen when she is joined by Mel who pours herself a glass of wine. The mother asks “You sure you should be drinking that?” as a hint to the audience that we now think she thinks Mel is pregnant. The comments continue over dinner until Mel can not take anymore and shouts “What do you think I am pregnant or something?!” in which the mother replies “Well I’m certainly not and I found a pregnancy test in the bathroom this morning”. Mel replies “How could you even think that of me mum, it’s not me!” Rachel shouts back “Well who is it then Mel?!” There is an awkward silence and confused faces at the dinner table. The silence breaks as Katie reveals that it is hers. Rachel gasps covering her face. Adam (Dad) tells Katie not to be so stupid. She stands in frustration and confirms that it is hers and that she doesn’t believe in abortion and runs upstairs. Rachel begins to break down, and the rest of the family are stunned. Adam is left in shock.

Story Synopsis

Oblivious


The film begins with Katie at a friends birthday party, she has had to much to drink and is all over her boyfriend (James). It ends with Katie and James making there to the bedroom and the rest is left to the audiences imagination. About 5 weeks later we see Katie asleep who suddenly wakes up by feeling violently sick, and she has a thought as to why that is. Taking a pregnancy test out of her bag she heads to the bathroom. Upon her journey she wakes up younger sister Lillian. Lillian goes running into her parents (Rachel and Adam) announcing whilst jumping onto their bed that she loves them. The rest of the family awake. Katie’s test is positive. Older sister Mel needs to use the bathroom and is banging on the door to get a startled Katie out. Katie hides the pregnancy test under her bed. The family head down and as mother (Rachel) does a head count she realises that Katie is missing. Calling Katie down she reluctantly follows. The begin to open presents and Katie looks rather subdued and miserable. Present opening ends and its time to get dressed. Whilst mum starts up the oven for the big meal that awaits them. Mel, who shares a room with Katie, gets dressed first and upon putting her ear ring in she drops it. Looking on the floor for it she sees something under Katie’s bed; the test. An annoyed Katie who has had to wait outside so long for her sister to get dressed walks in and finds Mel holding it in shock. Mel tells Katie she tells their parents or she will. Upon finishing the meal and plates being taken out, there is a lot of fuss at the family table over wine, glasses, crackers and what is for pudding. As they pass one another things Katie hands her mother the test. Rachel screams as she cant believe what she is holding and presumes that it is Mel, who angrily replies that its Katie’s. The film ends with the family gone all silent for once and Katie announcing that she is keeping it as she doesn’t believe in abortion.
